Pod Podmore leads our Eden team in Wheatley Park, Doncaster. We caught up with him to find out more about his journey of joining Eden.
Why did you join Eden?
I’d been a massive fan of The Message Trust since it started. I was really interested in Eden so my relationship with them goes back a long way.
I had tried doing something similar in my previous role as a church youth and community worker but it didn’t take off. My job came to an end unexpectedly so I looked around and visited The Message to find out what was going on beyond the prayer letters.
They prayed for me to find my next job and while there I ended up visiting a couple of Eden teams. I started to imagine, ‘Maybe we could do this!’
How did it impact your family?
The decision-making process for my family was huge. God said very clearly that it was a whole family thing and I needed to be sure that they were OK. I had imagined a very raw experience, but when it came to it, I realised it wasn’t a scary thing to ask my kids (12 and 17) and my wife to move. I was really listening closely to my wife and how she was feeling and we received peace and a clear sense that Doncaster was right for us.
My son felt like Wheatley Park was where we sensed our calling to community and my daughter was mid A-levels but wasn’t enjoying them so we moved and she picked up an apprenticeship. She left close friends behind but she understood what we were doing and what Eden was about and she could see why it was so exciting to get behind it.
Can you give us an insight into your life on Eden?
For me Eden is about being able to live my whole life among people I’m rubbing shoulders with just as I go about. It’s getting to know people warts and all – and vice versa. I can walk around the place with a real feeling of being embedded in a community rather than having a separation of work and life.
Activities and clubs are important and these need to be going on, but they are not the most important thing. Some of the most significant stuff I see – the bread and butter of what I do – is the interaction with people that were completely off the radar of some churches. With Eden this is the expectation and I love it!
