Creative and urban mission training
Over the last ten years, GENETIK has established a solid reputation for providing excellent ministry training for young adults.
Based in the vibrant city of Manchester and run by the youth organisation The Message, GENETIK is designed to break and shape you so you reach your potential in Christ.
What is it?
Ten months of intensive hands-on training in youth work. Sharing a common biblical studies foundation, three different tracks are offered: Creative Ministry and Urban Youthwork and Eden Worship. Each track offers a blend of facilitated workshops and practical opportunities working alongside local churches and other Message ministries.
Every day the team and guest tutors deliver interactive seminars designed to educate and equip. But it’s not all about the teaching programme – with placement opportunities working in some of the hardest areas of the city, youth work and outreach, schools work and big show events, it’s a rollercoaster ride of a year. Add to the mix the daily prayer and worship at Message HQ, testimonies of salvation and breakthrough, living and breathing in the heart of Eden… when all’s said and done, GENETIK will change you for life!
What’s involved?
During the first four months, you will receive evangelistic teaching (looking at topics such as Baptism and Old and New Testament teaching), every morning, followed by hands-on placements in the afternoons.
During the final six months, you will experience a variety of youth-based projects, based on your skills and talents, such as mission weeks in local schools and prisons.
There are three tracks, both including hands-on placements in several projects. The Urban track focuses on working in the community through placements such as youth clubs, prisons and detached ‘street’ work. The Creative track will help you hone your dancing, singing or DJ-ing skills, equipping you to use them in a variety of youth work settings. The Eden Worship track will accelerate your gifting in worship leading and songwriting alongside frontline youth ministry opportunities.
What support will I receive?
Your ‘host’ Eden project is run by a dedicated team who will support you in all your placement work, as well as the Church you become part of in that Eden area. Each Eden team has a full time leader who will oversee all aspects of your life on Eden. At Message HQ you will also be appointed a personal mentor from one of our full time staff who look take care of you spiritually and keep you accountable whilst on the course. The GENETIK Leaders are always on hand to look after every other aspect of your life whilst on the course.

How much does it cost?
There are three elements to your costs whilst on GENETIK. They break down like this:
- Course Fees - £2000. A 10% (non-refundable) deposit is required once you have been accepted on the course. The balance is due by the start date of your GENETIK year, (usually mid-September).
- Housing Costs – GENETIK will provide accommodation, usually in shared houses with others on the course, in the various Eden projects. Rent will usually be around £50 per week, plus bills. Your first month’s rent is due on the first day of the course, and on the 1st of every month from then on.
- Personal Allowance – You will also need to have your own personal money for things like food, transport and entertainment. Previous GENETIK students have found a good target for this is £100 – £150 a month and this is best raised by asking for people to sponsor you a little each month for the duration of the course.

Demand for the 2011/12 courses is expected to be very high and potential students are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible. Places are alloctated on a first-come basis so once we are full we will not accept any more application for this year. A rigorous interview process will determine the right candidates for the next intake in September 2011.
