OneThing: It’s not about me

In our new OneThing series, members of the Advance network share their top tip for sharing the gospel. Josh Green shares.

One thing I wish I knew when I started preaching the gospel…

…is that it’s not about me!

Romans 1:16 says, ‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.’

Paul says the Gospel is the power of God! It’s not my power, eloquent words or nice music that is going to save someone, it is only the power of God. It sounds simple, but I wonder how much have we really challenged ourselves with this idea. I wonder, how many times have you asked yourself, ‘Did I need the Holy Spirit to do that or was that just my gifting?’

Before I get up to preach I have to lay all my words, ideas and thoughts aside, take a breath and say, ‘Jesus, it’s only you that saves, it’s not about me. Let your will be done and not mine, if you want to do or say something else so be it.’

We have to admit that we are human, broken and weak and in our weakness God is strong. God can use a humble person for greatness if they bow the knee and submit wholly to the Spirit of God and his will.
