Higher Yorkshire Two Weeks of Prayer – Day One

Josh Wheeler – The Message Trust Yorkshire Hub

Back in April 2017 when the Yorkshire Hub was launched it was announced that in March 2019 the Higher Tour would be coming to Yorkshire. At the time it felt like an eternity away, but now we sit on the precipice of a mission that could reach 50,000 young people in just four weeks.

The scale of this mission is huge but the good thing is we have a God who is bigger than it all. We have this saying at the Message that ‘we are a movement that advances on our knees’ – prayer is the centre of everything we do and year after year we see the correlation of increased prayer hand in hand with increased movements of the Holy Spirit. We are therefore launching today a ‘Two Weeks of Prayer for Higher’ campaign where we will be encouraging all of our supporters to pray for Higher for at least five minutes every day for the next two weeks. We will be releasing daily devotionals written by us and our partners to aid you in your daily prayer.

I’m so glad you’re reading this post and I hope that you stick with us every day for the next two weeks as we commit this mission to God. Please feel free to forward these devotionals onto your friends and church communities as we would love to have as many people uniting with us in prayer.

In this first devotional post I’d like to reflect on verse that I have shared pretty much every time I have preached in the last few months which is Matthew 28:18-19 ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’

Since I was a child I’ve always operated with the mandate to ‘save the best until last’. Whether that was eating my vegetables first so I could enjoy the taste of the main course in my mouth for the rest of the evening, or whether it was playing our best song last in the set leaving the audience with a memory of the best we could do. So after all of Jesus’ ministry I find it particularly poignant that Jesus’ last words on this earth were and instruction to ‘Go’. It’s so easy and comfortable to ‘stay’ within the Christian community, but there is an instruction to all his disciples, including you and me, to ‘go’. With the Higher Tour our big commission is to ‘go’ into the schools and communities to communicate the gospel to young people who are not connected with the church.

So today please pray for courage, for the Message and for all of our partners involved in the mission. Pray against a spirit of fear and that instead we can boldly ‘go and make disciples.’
