From Academy to Eden

Tamara is one of our Message Academy graduates who now lives and works with the Eden team in Wheatley Park (Doncaster). She shares her story:

In 2018 I joined the Message Academy. I had a passion for working with offenders, specifically young offenders. Over the course I had a placement in primary schools with Chip Kendall helping run Soul Children. This is where I found another passion working with primary school age children. I saw a job advertised for a youth worker with Eden Wheatley Park but I wasn’t confident that Eden was right for me. It wasn’t until I spent three of our mission weeks near to the end of the course with Eden teams that I realised how impactful and meaningful it is working in those communities.

Now I work as the youth worker in Wheatley Park. Over the past seven months I have come to love the community and all the people in it. The church and Eden team already had a great connection with the local primary school. I joined in helping with ‘open the book’ sessions and helping to run assemblies with Pod, the Eden team leader. Starting in January, I now help with year 5 and 6 twice a week as a teaching assistant. This has helped strengthen a relationship with the staff and the pupils.

I now see some of the children from the community two-three times a week either in school or at one of the clubs the Eden team run.

Splash – the church’s primary school age club that takes place once a month.

Jam – our weekly youth club.

Youth Alpha – our newly started course in partnership with another church in the area.

Being able to help in the school has been a huge highlight of my job and I’m excited to get even more involved in the future.
