The Message Bus has headed to Gendros in Swansea and the team are seeing the gospel make a great impact in this community.
The Message first engaged with this community and the partner church – Gendros Baptist Church – through Higher South Wales. The church wanted to be involved with the tour but without any existing youth work they weren’t sure how. They offered to feed the bands who were on mission. This created a lot of hype in the local community as the local residents thought that celebrities were visiting their town. Despite not thinking they’d be able to properly engage with the tour, the church ended up taking a bus full of young people to their local Higher gig.
Wanting to continue the work started by the work of the Higher Tour, the church secured funding to have the Message Bus. For a community that had no other youth provision, this was a great achievement.
From the first week of the bus sessions, many young people turned up to engage with the activities.
One week, four teenage girls showed up. They were all smoking and didn’t seem too interested. However, the team got chatting to the girls and one of them said how she had started to believe in Jesus. She shared how she was struggling with an eating disorder and wanted God to help her. Over the next few weeks the team had great conversations with this group of girls who have had a lot of questions and discussions. Three out of the four have now asked Jesus into their lives with the fourth pondering over the questions of which the truth is beginning to resonate with her.
From September the bus will be moving on to Blaen Y Maes. A similar community to Gendros, a deprived area with a lack of youth provision. Please pray for both of these communities that our teams will be able to make a lasting impact and that the partner churches will be able to continue with the discipleship.
