True Fasting Week 06
Isaiah 58: 11-12
The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
I have spent the last 10 years in a small patch of East London as part of Eden. It is a community that has captured my heart and is very much home. Over the years, however, we have sometimes found ourselves feeling like we are in a sun-scorched land, one that is too dry and broken and sapping all we have. Sometimes that came to us individually and other times is came to us as a whole team. In those moments, my reaction was to work harder, dig deeper and strategize more fervently.
What I have learnt time and again though is that these moments are the ones when we are called to give up our pride, give up our saviour complex and give up our striving and instead rest in the arms of God.
Richard Foster writes that ‘fasting reminds us that we are sustained ‘by every word that comes from the mouth of God’ (Matthew 4:4). Food does not sustain us; God sustains us’. Our striving in those sun scorched places will not sustain us, no matter how good intentioned our efforts are or how well researched our strategies are. God is what will sustain us. When we have taken time to stop and give up the need to outwardly look like we know what we are doing or prove our worth, we have been strengthened and have seen breakthrough.
Charles Spurgeon wrote ‘our seasons of fasting and prayer at the Tabernacle have been high days indeed; never has Heaven’s gate stood wider’. My longing for this patch of London is that Heaven’s gate will stand wide open, and the Kingdom will break forth.
Lord, Help me to give up my need to be the one with the answers and the plan Help me to give up my need to be the one who people look to and ask for help. Help me to give up my need to prove my worth and credentials through this ministry. Amen
