In June last year, we ran a No More Knives schools tour in Glasgow’s East End. Recently, Kate from our Scotland hub, was invited along to a youth gathering with the churches across the East End to hear how one young person, Hannah*, was impacted tour.
Hannah shared, ‘I grew up in Cameroon with my grandparents after my mum passed away and my dad decided he didn’t want me in his life. My grandparents took me to church and told me about Jesus. After a while, my grandparents thought that I should come to the UK and live with my aunt to have a better life.
‘When I first came to Glasgow, I only spoke French and really struggled in school because I was bullied for not speaking English or the other African languages some of the children were speaking. It was such a difficult time for me.
‘But then The Message came into my school with the No More Knives tour and I decided to go to the gig the team invited me to. There, I heard again how much Jesus loves me and how the past, with all of the hurt and rejection I’ve experienced, doesn’t define me because I’m a new creation in Jesus. It was the message that I needed to hear, and I could release all that I’d been through back to God.
‘Since then, my faith has continued to grow, and things have turned around for me. I’m now studying to be a nurse and I’m really involved in my church and the youth group nights. It’s amazing to meet other young people who were also impacted by the tour.’
