After the summer holidays, our Respect ME teams are back in schools and have already hit the ground running, sharing gospel-packed lessons on relationships, bullying and self-worth. We caught up with Lauren who told us about a conversation she had with one young person:
‘During one school visit, I got chatting with pupil Sophie after she’d been in our lesson on self-esteem. She started opening up about her home life, she how she’d lived in six different homes in six months and was now in foster care. As she was telling me this, she said ‘I won’t make anything of my life, nothing is constant.’
‘This really got to me because I could relate to how she was feeling. I’d also been in foster care when I was younger, so grabbed the opportunity to share my story with Sophie and how everything had changed for me when I became a Christian.
‘I chatted with her about how God is a loving father who is constant and that he can always be trusted and as I shared this, Sophie said, ‘I’ve been thinking about God a lot recently. Is he real, and if so, can he help me too?’
‘Wow, isn’t God amazing! He was revealing himself to Sophie before our Respect ME team even went into the school. I got to tell her that yes, he was real, that he loves her and has a good plan for her life. I was also able to recommend a local church to her and now Sophie is really keen to go along and find out more about Jesus.
‘Off the back of my conversation, one of Sophie’s teachers also got chatting with me saying that she was really moved by my story and how my faith got me through difficult times. She wants our Respect ME team to come back into the school soon and do some one-to-one support and mentoring with the young people in the school. It’s amazing to see how God is opening doors for us to share his hope and about the good news of Jesus.’
